Getting Ready: Family Photos

How to prepare your family for a photo session...

I just scheduled my family photos...two days from now! Yikes! I know how important it is that we get in a least one session a year as a family no matter how often my kids get in fron't of my own lens. But our favorite local 'tog had a last minute opening and I jumped on it.

If you are planning for your own family photos this fall I hope you have more time to prepare than me...but even if yours are last minute like mine, there are things you can do to help your family and kids of all ages prepare.

-Choose the Right Location

Selecting the perfect location is the first step to creating memorable family photos. Consider your family's personality and preferences. Whether it's a park, beach, your own backyard, or a sentimental location, the setting should reflect your family's style and comfort. For me, I shoot in the woods on my property in Bartlett every week. Though we have lived here for 3 years, we have never had our photos taken in the woods. So we went with that. It's an area my family is familiar with and comfortable in just steps from our house. If the location of your shoot is a little bit farther of a commute, be mindful of what the kiddos are doing during the trip. If babies fall asleep, they may be cranky on the other end. If little ones are playing with tech, will it be hard to pull them away when you arrive?

-Plan Your Wardrobe

Coordinate, don't match! Gone are the days of everyone wearing the same outfit. Instead, choose a color palette or theme that complements each other. Earthy tones, pastels, or a mix of neutrals can create a harmonious look. Avoid loud patterns or logos that may distract from your family's connection. With only two days to coordinate, we had to work with what we had on hand. We went with a blend of whites, soft and navy blues, jeans, and khakis. If you have questions about colors based on your setting, your photographer can help!

-Timing is Crucial

The golden hour, typically the hour just after sunrise or before sunset, provides the most beautiful, soft, and flattering natural light. Schedule your photo session during this time for stunning results. Avoid midday when the sun is harsh and shadows are strong. Our session will start at 5:30 and I know the lighting in the woods will be just perfect!

-Communicate with Your Photographer

Before the photo session, have a chat with your photographer to discuss your vision, any specific shots you want, and any concerns you may have. A good photographer will tailor the session to your needs and preferences. My 'tog has taken pictures at my home before and we discussed using external lighting to help fill in shadows as well.

-Prepare the Kids

If you have young children, prepare them for the session by explaining what to expect and why it's important. A well-timed snack and some favorite toys or activities can help keep them engaged and cooperative during the shoot. I am all about bribing kids when it comes to photos. But whatever works best for your kids, you know them best. I also recommend having them take some selfies on your phone so they can see what their different "cheeses" look like.

-Relax and Be Yourselves

One of the most important aspects of a successful family photo session is authenticity. Embrace your family's quirks, laughter, and love. Encourage natural interactions rather than stiff poses. The best moments often happen when you're simply being yourselves.

-Be Patient

Sometimes, especially with little ones, things may not go as planned. Be patient and go with the flow. Candid moments often turn out to be the most precious, so let your photographer capture them.

-Have Fun!

Lastly, remember that family photo sessions are about celebrating your love and connection. Enjoy the experience, share laughs, and make lasting memories together. A relaxed and joyful atmosphere will shine through in your photos.

Preparing for a family photo session doesn't have to be stressful. By carefully selecting your location, coordinating your wardrobe, and communicating with your photographer, you can ensure a successful and enjoyable experience. Remember, the most cherished family photos are those that capture your authentic selves, so relax, have fun, and let your love shine through the lens. Happy photographing!
